Mathematics

Yes, mathematics. A friend sent me a link to an article in Scientific American about knitting mathematical objects. The title of the article, The Stunning Symbiosis between Math and Knitting, is not complete — they seldom are. There’s crochet and bobbin lace in the slide show as well.

KnitLinkWell worth a look, especially the slide show.

Drowning Spool out soon!

Mark your calendars if you’re in or near the Twin Cities: On Saturday, February 7, I’ll be doing a signing at Once Upon A Crime mystery bookstore from 12 to 2.  And at Excelsior Bay Books on Saturday, February 15 from 1 to 2 or 2:30.  (I’ll be having lunch at Antiquity Rose beforehand, if you want a cute place in Excelsior to come ahead of time.)

If you’re in or near Madison, Wisconsin, I’ll be doing a “Slam” with other authors later in February, the 22nd, 23rd, or 24th.  Don’t have the exact date – the “Slam” is all three days – or time, yet.  Ellen Kuhfeld with be there, too, promoting her book, Secret Murder.

Coming Up On Halloween, it’s time for mystery and murder!

I’ll be at Magna Cum Murder in Indianapolis the weekend of October 25-27. It’s always a good convention, well worth going to. Hope to see you there!

Tales from an Earlier Me:

I wrote the Peter Brichter series under my maiden name of Mary Monica Pulver. It has mostly been out of print for years — all that could be bought new was a trade paperback of Murder at the War, put out by FTL Publications. But time and technology march on, and the five Peter Brichter mysteries are now available from FTL in both e-book and trade paperback. (The trade paperbacks are just out — I got two copies of each just yesterday. It will take some while for them to work through the system and appear in catalogs.) Click the book images to see more.

Free e-books from one of my earlier selves!

FTL Publications, which is republishing my Peter Brichter series both in paper and as e-books, is offering a free download of Murder at the War (written as Mary Monica Pulver) April 16-17 through Amazon.  This was my first published novel.  It is set at The Great Pennsic War, an annual event of The Society for Creative Anachronism.  You’ve heard of folks who re-create battles of the American War Between the States?  This is sort of like that, only earlier.  MUCH earlier.  Medieval times, the politics, the statesmanship, the chivalry, the music, dance, food, costumes, arts and crafts, are brought to life through the SCA at weekend members-only events.  But the War is the Big One.  Thousands of medievalists gather at a campground in eastern Pennsylvania to eat, drink, game, dance and, most of all, fight.  Using real armor and rattan swords and pole arms, they stage unchoreographed battles in the fields and woods of the campground.  And in the middle of all this fake dying, a man in armor is found for-real dead of a stab wound.  The State Police think they’ve uncovered a cult and are baffled by the esoterica of the Society.  It is up to police detective Peter Brichter, who is also Lord Stephen von Helle, to obey King William’s royal command to find the murderer before this shocking discourtesy destroys the Society’s grandest game.

Mary Monica’s Kindle books:

Murder at the War: April 16-17
The Unforgiving Minutes: April 22-23
Original Sin: April 29-30
Show Stopper: May 7-8
Ashes to Ashes: May 22-23
